Aste Nagusia
In Basque country, they certainly know how to liven things up. With typical big-hearted warmth, scores of gigantic grinning puppets and floats welcome over 100,000 revellers to these week-long celebrations. The most ravenous of culture vultures will be satiated with the large number of concerts – ranging from rock and pop to classical and jazz – while modern-day Samsons battle it out in the strongman competition. Here, men race to chop a metre-thick log in two from between their legs with an axe, or get into four-man teams to burrow a series of holes in a block of granite using nothing but sheer willpower and a steel javelin!
